IF YOU LIKE..., YOU SHOULD TRY...

You loved the book; now you want another great read! How do you choose? Well, I'm going to try to help. Starting with our most popular books at the EHPMS library, I'll suggest titles that have a similar "feel." Hopefully, the users of this blog will add their own suggestions, and we can get you started on your next book!

CONSPIRACY 365 series by GABRIELLE LORD
I was chatting with a middle grade student who is devouring this series and he asked about other books to read after he has finished . He wants more electric action, shocking twists, and daredevil adventure, so I did some research only to discover that there are two more books in the 365 series - Revenge and Malice and I've ordered both. Gabrielle Lord has also written a trilogy that follows 365; it's called Black Ops and it should be available soon. Here are some more titles to try.
The Recruit (Cherub series) by Robert Muchamore
The Henderson Boys series by Robert Muchamore
Alex Ryder series by Anthony Horowitz
The Diamond Boy series by Anthony Horowitz
The Homelander series by Andrew Klavan
Stormrunners by Roland Smith
IQ by Roland Smith
The Young Bond series by Charlie Higson
The Guild Trilogy by Joshua Mowll
Steel Trapp series by Ridley Pearson
Daniel X series by James Patterson
Maximum Ride series by James Patterson

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by JOHN GREEN
John Green is one of the top five requested authors in our library for one very good reason: his books are amazing! His stories are realistic, dealing with tough issues like cancer, drugs, drunk driving, alienation; but do so with moments of tenderness and humor. His characters are complex and interesting, yet completely authentic. Try all of his books and then take a look at the rest of this list for more stories that will stay with you forever.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green
Looking for Alaska by John Green
An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
Paper Towns by John Green
The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth LaBan
13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chboski
Its Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A. S. King
Adam Sees the Ants by A.S. King
If I Stay by Gail Forman
Novels by Meg Rosoff
Novels by Gabrielle Zevin

PERFECT CHEMISTRY by SIMONE ELKELES
If I could clone this author, I would. Every student who reads this book, falls under its spell. Fortunately, there are three books in the Perfect Chemistry series and another series of two novels, Leaving Paradise and Return to Paradise. She has started a new series; the first book is Wild Cards.

These are all non-fantasy romantic reads with a slightly dangerous edge to the romance: forbidden, Romeo and Juliet love. I think the main appeal is to be found in the richly drawn characters, especially the gorgeous gang guys.

You Against Me by Jenny Downham
Don't Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala
Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally
The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Snitch by Allison Van Diepen

If you like handsome Hispanic boys, you might try something a little different. Alex Sanchez writes amazing books about gay relationships, which contain many of the same conflicts found in Perfect Chemistry. After all, love is love is love is love...wherever it is found.

SKULLDUGGERY PLEASANT by DEREK LANDY

The eccentric, action-packed fantasy series, Skulduggery Pleasant has many loyal fans at HPSS.

Written for middle schoolers, it is the tale of a girl who inherits her uncle's detective agency only to discover that her new partner is a fire-wielding skeleton! If you love high-adrenalin fantasy laced with humor, try these series.

Vampirates by Justin Somper
The Last Apprentice by Joseph Delaney
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Immortal Secrets of Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott
The Ranger's Apprentice by  John Flanagan
The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix
Septimus Heap by Angie Sage
Discworld by Terry Pratchett (This is a more advanced read and it is a very long series, which is a bonus if you love it.)

ERAGON by CHRISTOPHER PAOLINI

This epic series features dragons and huge battle scenes. Readers caught in its spell seem to love the big books with their detailed world building. The readalike series listed below begin with books suitable for younger readers and move on to books which are more appropriate for older readers.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Green Rider by Kristen Britain
The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind
The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
The Red Wolf Conspiracy by V. S. Redick

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS by LEMONY SNICKET
What is the appeal of these odd stories? They feel like they've existed forever with their twisted tales of misery, reminding me of the works of Charles Dickens. Full of shocking coincidences and hilariously caricatured characters, these tales don't take themselves too seriously. If you love dark, ironic humor, try the following books.
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood
The Secret Books by Pseudonymous Bosch
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making  by Cathrynne M. Valente
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Time Stops for No Mouse by Michael Hoeye

  4. Maggie, I have to admit that superhero fiction is very unfamiliar territory for me. There are lots of books about young people with super powers like I am Number Four by Pitacus Lore and the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, but I think you want to read about the famed superheroes. I suggest that you go to Goodreads on the internet and search for superhero fiction. Look through the list and if you find anything promising, come in and ask me to purchase it for the library. Hope this helps, Ms Schmor

    1. Hi Ruby, Yes, we have the complete series. Click on the link Fantastic Fiction to go to a great site that lists all of James Patterson's series books in the proper order. Your confusion might be due to the Maximum Ride manga series that is based on the books. Hope this helps.

    1. Hey back to you, We don't have that title and I tried to find it on Amazon with no luck. I did, however, just purchase a graphic novel called Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. It's a collection of scary stories with amazing illustrations. Might this be what you are looking for?

  12. YES! You really should finish with Allegiant, the third novel in the series with a shocking twist. Check out the Genres/Trends page as there are lots of titles for dystopian books. I also just got a new book, The Marrow Thieves, which I am excited to read. Come to the library for a longer chat about great books.
