Scary Reads

I've just finished booktalks with all of the English classes and, as usual, the scary reads are flying off the shelves. Here are three titles that have already been returned with very enthusiastic reviews.

The Sacrifice Box by Martin Stewart

Sep, Arkle, Mack, Lamb and Hadley: five friends thrown together one hot, sultry summer. When they discover an ancient stone box hidden in the forest, they decide to each make a sacrifice: something special
to them, committed to the box for ever. And they make a pact: they will never return to the box at night; they'll never visit it alone; and they'll never take back their offerings.

Four years later, the gang have drifted apart. Then a series of strange and terrifying events take place, and Sep and his friends understand that one of them has broken the pact.

As their sacrifices haunt them with increased violence and hunger, they realise that they are not the first children to have found the box in their town's history. And ultimately, the box may want the greatest sacrifice of all: one of them.

Contagion by Erin Bowman

Campfire by Shawn Sarles

While camping in a remote location, Maddie Davenport gathers around the fire with her friends and family to tell scary stories. Caleb, the handsome young guide, shares the local legend of the ferocious Mountain Men who hunt unsuspecting campers and leave their mark by carving grisly antlers into their
victims' foreheads.

The next day, the story comes true.

Now Maddie and her family are lost in the deep woods--with no way out--being stalked by their worst nightmares. Because there were other, more horrifying stories told that night--and Maddie's about to find out just how they end...

Are you a season-reader?

Does the mood of the season influence your choice of book? If so, then you are likely looking for something a little dark and spooky as we move into fall and look ahead to Halloween. Every autumn, I have a number of students requesting It by Stephen King which is a great horror, but not exactly appropriate for middle grade. My quest for a shorter, more toned down scare that involves a small group of misfit friends working together to defeat an unspeakably evil force has been rewarded! I'm not going to reveal the title now, but come up to the counter and ask and I'll give you the gruesome details.

Scroll down to the next post to read about some of the ghost stories available in the library.
